Visual Inspection (VT)

Overview: What is Visual Inspection?

Working principle of visual inspection: The surface of a part is inspected with optical means: Either directly through the eyes of the inspector or with the help of optical tools such as magnifiers or cameras. Visual inspection is oftentimes the first step of an inspection routine before applying other NDT methods. But there are also standalone visual inspection applications, both human-operated and automated systems (machine vision / industrial vision).

Variations:

  • Unassisted visual inspection (the human eye)
  • VT with assistive tools like optical devices
  • Automated visual inspection / artificial vision / machine vision

Use cases: Surface inspection for quick damage detection; with or without the assistance of optical devices

Materials: all surfaces
